As a guidebook author, it’s important for me to get my books rated on Amazon. For one, it helps me build my reputation as an author.
Positive reviews are seen as a mark of quality and authority. They let people know I know what I’m talking about when it comes to hiking trails.
The more ratings and reviews a book has, the more likely it is to be recommended to other fellow hikers and potential readers.
If you bought one of my books on Amazon, thank you. If you’re not sure how to leave a review or a star rating on Amazon, I’m here to help you.

Seriously, so quick and easy, right? I also wanted to provide the step-by-step instructions below from the point of login on the Amazon website and mobile app.
Step-by-Step: How to Leave an Amazon Review
From the Amazon website or mobile app, you can leave a star rating or write a review. Click below to jump down to Online Review or Mobile Review.
Note that there are subtle differences between the two, and my hope is that the images for each step will help you to leave a star rating and a review. Thank you.
Online Review
Below please find an easy step-by-step tutorial for leaving ratings and reviews on Amazon from a web browser.
Step One:
First things first, navigate to Amazon on your favorite web browser.
Step Two:
Sign in to your Amazon account. Look for the yellow “Sign in” button in the top right-hand corner of the web page.
You’ll know you’re signed in when it reads “Hello, Your Name” at the top of the page. In my case, it reads “Hello, Erin.”
Step Three:
Hover over your name so that a drop-down box opens up. There should be two columns. “Your Lists” is on the left and “Your Account” is on the right.
Next, click “Orders.” Alternatively, you can click “Returns & Orders” on the top-level navigation bar. Both take you to the same screen for “Your Orders.”
Step Four:
Search for your order that contained one of my three hiking books. You can do so by entering the book name and clicking “Search Orders.”
Alternatively, you can click the drop-down for the year that you placed the order to see all your orders in a given year.
There is no statute of limitations when it comes to leaving a review or rating. You can do so at any time after purchasing any of the books.
Step Five:
Once you’ve found the purchase, click on the “Write a product review” button to the right of the listing.
Once you click this button, you’ll reach a page that reads “Review Your Purchases.” You can leave a star rating. You can also write a written review.
Step Six:
Click the number of stars you want to leave one of my books. Once you do, a “Write a review” button will appear under the book.
Click this button if you want to also write a few words about the book. You won’t be able to leave a review until you click a star to leave a star rating.
Note that if you want to simply leave a star (thank you), you’re all set once you do. There are no further actions you need to take after you click on a star.
Step Seven:
If you choose to click “Write a review” you’ll be taken to a screen like what you see below titled “Create Review.”
Here you can add a headline (which appears in bold above your review), a photo or video (optional) and a few words about the book.
You can also adjust your public name if you want it to appear differently in a review, maybe just as first name, last initial (e.g., Erin G).
When you’re finished, be sure to click the yellow “Submit” button at the bottom of the page. That’s it, that’s all.
Once you click “Submit” you’ll see a new page with a message that reads “Review submitted – Thank you!”
It may take a few days for your review to be processed and posted. Amazon will send you an email once your review is live.
Mobile Review
Below please find an easy step-by-step tutorial for leaving ratings and reviews using Amazon’s mobile app.
Step One:
Once you’re logged into the mobile app, click the “person” icon at the bottom of the screen. If you’re logged in, it will read “Hello, First Name.”
Step Two:
This will take you to a screen with four buttons near the top, including “Your Orders,” “Buy Again,” “Your Account” and “Your Lists.” Click “Your Orders.”
Step Three:
On this screen, it will read “Your Orders” at the top. You can “Search all orders” and type in the name of the book.
Alternatively, you can scroll through recent orders to find the book. Note that it defaults to orders with in the past three months.
If your purchase was more than three months ago, click the “Filter” button to open up a new screen that allows you to filter orders by order type and order date.
Step Four:
Once you’ve found the book, click on the listing and scroll down to “How’s your item?” Here you can click on one of two options.
You can either “Write a product review” or “Create a video review.” For purposes of this tutorial, go ahead and click to write a product review.
Step Five:
When you click to write a product review, you’ll be able to leave a star rating. Here you can also submit a written review.
Note that if you want to simply leave a star (thank you), you’re all set once you do. There are no further actions you need to take after you click on a star.
If you want to write a review, add a headline (which appears in bold above your review), a photo or video (optional) and a few words about the book.
When you’re finished, click the yellow “Submit” button at the bottom of the page. That’s it, that’s all.
Once you click “Submit” you’ll see a new page with a message that reads “Review submitted – Thank you!”
It may take a few days for your review to be processed and posted. Amazon will send you an email once your review is live.
